First Things First
The first thing to do is get a piece of paper or program on the computer such as Microsoft Office. The money should be split up into different sections that show were you are spending it. A miscellaneous category shouldn’t be there. The sections should include a category for living payments. Water, cable, and electricity need to be put into the same category labeled utilities. Kids should have their own category. The food category should be split into restaurants and a groceries to keep them separate. You and your spouse will need two different categories if you can afford them. There should be a category for personal items like toilet paper and soap and even a category for car stuff. After making the categories, you should be able to clearly see where you are spending your money.
Next Thing
Go through and make sure you know what amount is going to go to bills that can’t be altered in any way. Phone bills and rent might be listed in this category. Make sure they are at unchangeable rates in order to keep your budget intact. This teaches you what money goes where in your budget. Each category should then have an amount placed in it that you normally spend each month. If you don’t know how much you normally spend then you can try living for a month while keeping very close track of what you spend money on. It may shock you how much money is being spent in different areas.
Last Thing on the List
The Last thing you have to do is make sure the budget balances out with the amount of money you are going to be making. Other categories may suffer due to this change. You should try to stay under your budget so you can save the extra money at the end of each month. It is hard, but you must stick out a budget. You may need to stop going to restaurants once the budget suggests you are done with it. All the disciplining yourself to stop buying what you want will be worth it in the end.
My experience
When I was in college, I struggled just like everyone else. Everything seemed impossible to be paid. Everything had to be added into my budget such as tuition, books, or even my monthly bills. I thought there was no way we’d be able to pay for food after paying for all of those expenses. I needed to go through and budget as little money as possible to each category. I needed a new program, so I found one and tried it. I know this program created wonders in my lives. Somehow I was able to pay all of my debts with a small paycheck. I still use the program for my budgeting needs.
